One difficult thing many Nigerians struggle with is the fear of starting over. People often feel embarrassed when life does not go according to plan. A failed business, job loss, relationship problems, academic setbacks, or financial struggles can make someone feel like they have completely failed in life. Because society celebrates success loudly, many people secretly fear failure deeply. In Nigeria, there is strong pressure to “make it” quickly. Once someone starts progressing, family members, friends, and even neighbors begin expecting constant success. That is why many people become ashamed when they suddenly need to restart their lives from zero again. Some people stay in unhappy situations simply because they fear public embarrassment. Some refuse to learn new skills because they feel “too old” to begin again. Others continue pretending everything is fine while silently struggling financially. But the truth is this: starting again is not failure. Sometimes life forces people to rebuild in order to grow stronger. Many successful Nigerians today once experienced rejection, business losses, unemployment, disappointments, or painful mistakes before eventually finding stability. What made the difference was their willingness to continue despite setbacks. The problem is that many people compare their lives too much with others. Social media makes this worse because people mostly post achievements while hiding struggles. As a result, someone restarting life may feel alone or “behind,” even though many others are facing similar situations quietly. Growth is rarely smooth. Life sometimes moves in stages. A person may succeed in one season and struggle in another. That is normal. There is no shame in rebuilding your life honestly. Sometimes the strongest people are not the ones who never failed, but the ones who found courage to begin again despite fear and embarrassment. At the end of the day, progress is still possible as long as someone refuses to completely give up on themselves. Do you think society makes people too ashamed of starting over after failure?
