Location and Ecology
Location: Situated in the Kenyan section of the Great Rift Valley, near the town of Naivasha, in Nakuru County. It sits at a high altitude of 1,884 meters (6,181 ft) above sea level, making it the highest freshwater lake in the Rift Valley.
Name Origin: The name comes from the local Maasai term ɛnaɨpɔ́sha, meaning "that which heaves" or "rough water," referring to the sudden storms and waves that can arise.
Freshwater Status: Unlike most other Rift Valley lakes, which are alkaline (soda lakes), Naivasha is freshwater. This is due to the fact that while it has no visible surface outlet, it is believed to have an underground outflow that prevents the build-up of salts.
Inflow: It is primarily fed by the perennial Malewa and Gilgil rivers.
Ramsar Site: The lake was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1995 for its crucial role in supporting diverse flora and fauna.
Wildlife and Attractions
Wildlife: Lake Naivasha is famous for its dense and varied wildlife, particularly its large population of hippos (estimated at over 1,500) that can often be seen in the water or grazing on the shores at dusk.
Birdwatching: It is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, hosting over 400 different species, including the African Fish Eagle and various species of cormorants and pelicans.
Crescent Island: This is a popular spot accessible by boat, often called the "private park" because visitors can enjoy walking safaris among plains game like giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, and wildebeest as there are no large predators.
Hell's Gate National Park: Located nearby, the park features dramatic volcanic scenery, rock formations (like Fischer's Tower), and gorges, and is one of the few Kenyan parks where visitors can explore by bicycle or on foot.
