Meaning:
The name Yahweh (often meant Jehovah) is the most sacred and personal name of God in the Bible.
It is first revealed in Exodus 3:14, when God spoke to Moses from the burning bush: “God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
The Hebrew word YHWH (Yahweh) comes from the verb “to be” (hayah), meaning “He who exists by Himself” or “The Eternal One.”
Biblical Meaning and Insight
Yahweh expresses God’s self-existence, eternity, and unchanging nature.
It means God is not created, nor does He depend on anything or anyone to exist.
He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
Yahweh is also the covenant name of God, showing His faithful relationship with His people.
Whenever Israel called Him Yahweh, it reminded them of His promise-keeping nature and His nearness to them.
